Five Things We Love Most About Sunderland

Happy Valentine’s Day! To mark a day traditionally devoted to love, we thought we’d take the time to celebrate the love of our life: the city of Sunderland! We’ve already highlighted different aspects of the city’s past and future, so here are the top five things we love most about Sunderland, in all its glory!

The history

People have lived in Sunderland since at least the 7th century AD, and its history is one of learning and industry, ship-building, manufacture and fueling the powerhouse of Britain during the Industrial Revolution. This legacy is still with us today, in the form of the distinctive Victorian-era houses, bridges and docks that define the city, as well as much older spots like St Peter’s Church in Monkwearmouth. Local museums like the Sunderland Museum help keep the city’s heritage alive!

The area

Right on the coastline with two beautiful beaches, and connected to nearby Newcastle by the Tyne and Wear Metro, Sunderland is perfectly situated to make the most of everything the North East has to offer. It’s also one of the safest cities in the UK thanks to low crime rates, low house prices and low chances of floods – Sunderland is a great place to live!

The culture

Sunderland is rich in culture and the arts – the museum holds regular exhibitions of local artists, the National Glass Centre is one of the world’s leading schools for glasswork, and the streets themselves are home to vibrant street art and murals. The Empire Theatre is one of the North East’s biggest and most lavish theatres, hosting a variety of exciting shows, and there’s all manner of live music on at bars and clubs across the city. Whatever you enjoy, Sunderland has it!

The food

Sunderland leaves you spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out and going for drinks, something we regularly promote on our Instagram account. The eateries along Roker Seafront alone offer tapas, pizza, fish and chips, coffee and cake, and ice creams. Further into town the city boasts pubs and restaurants, cocktail bars and dessert bars, for fine dining, quick bites, and everything in between, no matter what your budget or mood. Plenty of good spots for a Valentine’s Day date!

The people

How else could we end this list? The people of Sunderland are among the nicest you’ll ever meet – warm, friendly, community-minded, passionate about their home, hardworking and honest. We love working in such a community!

We could not choose a finer city to call our home and live and work in. This Valentine’s Day, visit Sunderland – a city to fall in love with!
